As one researcher puts it, “It is not difficult to imagine a conspiracy theory connecting her disappearance with the Japanese.” The strongest version suggests she and navigator Fred Noonan were captured and executed. Roswell: The Birth of the Modern UFO Myth

In 1947, the military claimed a high‑altitude balloon crashed near Roswell, New Mexico. Eyewitnesses insisted it was an Unidentified Flying Object, complete with small, thin‑limbed bodies. The evidence is minimal, but the legend remains—largely because Roswell arrived at a moment when Americans were anxious with worries about the Cold War and atomic annihilation.

Roswell became the seedbed of modern UFO culture, spawning decades of speculation about government cover‑ups, alien retrieval teams, and secret Air Force programs. Even skeptics acknowledge that Roswell’s staying power reflects a deeper unease about what the government does—and does not—tell the public.

The Murder of Martin Luther King Jr. – April 4, 1968

James Earl Ray confessed to the assassination, but later recanted. Civil cases later suggested that Ray was not the killer, pointing instead to a local bar owner. King’s family believed Ray’s story, while the government did not. Despite speculation about larger networks, the evidence still points to Ray alone. However, the theory persists because the assassination was a national tragedy, and with the entire country watching, alternative narratives are easily created.

The Philadelphia Experiment- October 1943

According to the tale, the USS Eldridge was made invisible through an electromagnetic field inspired by Einstein’s Unified Field Theory. Witnesses described a green fog, sailors catching fire, and men fused into the ship’s steel. The Navy denied everything. The story’s fictional nature has kept it from gaining modern traction, but it remains a fascinating example of how scientific breakthroughs can inspire fantastical fears.

General Patton’s Final Ride – 1945

General George S. Patton died in a car accident shortly after World War II. Some believe he was silenced for his anti‑Soviet views or fear he might reveal secrets. Official reports vanished, no autopsy was performed, and despite 2 others in the vehicle, only Patton was seriously injured. The theory persists, though proof does not. It reflects Cold War anxieties and the belief that powerful figures sometimes die under suspicious circumstances.

Other Theories: From England’s Role in the Civil War to the Bolshevik Revolution

Some conspiracies, like the idea that England initiated the Civil War and American banks funded the Bolshevik Revolution, range from improbable to intriguing. Pearl Harbor remains one of the most debated events. Two months before the attack, our military had cracked the Japanese code and deciphered several Japanese messages indicating the impending attack. Some argue that Stanton, who clashed with Lincoln over Reconstruction policy, had wanted to remove a president he felt was too lenient toward the South.

Historians find no evidence supporting this theory. The security failures were real but typical of wartime issues, and Stanton’s actions after the assassination reflect urgency rather than conspiracy. The theory, however, continues to persist because it speaks to a timeless fear of distrusting powerful people and the government they represent.

The Catholic Church Conspiracy: A 19th-Century Theory

Another theory, popular among anti-Catholic writers of the 19th century, suggested that the Catholic Church orchestrated the assassination. The Knights of the Golden Circle

In 1865, Washington reeled from Lincoln’s assassination. Booth was killed, nine conspirators were tried, and four were hanged. The official story is familiar. The conspiracy involving the Knights of the Golden Circle (KGC) is less so.

The KGC, founded before the Civil War, sought to expand slavery across the South, Cuba, and Nicaragua. According to the theory, hundreds of thousands of Americans were members, including Booth, several conspirators, and possibly members of Lincoln’s cabinet. The media mocked him, calling the story a “gigantic hoax.” Yet after two months of investigation, the House Committee concluded that much of Butler’s testimony was true. There was even proof that a military march on Washington had been planned. No one was prosecuted, and the episode—known as the Business Plot—quietly disappeared as the nation turned its attention toward the coming war.

Cold War Conspiracies: Fear in an Atomic Age

The Cold War produced a new wave of conspiracy thinking—some fantastical, some grounded in real geopolitical tension.

UFOs and Government Cover‑ups
